Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away... Thus begins one of the screen's
most exciting contributions to modern myth. On a small planet, Tatooine,
the dreams and fears of a young man, Luke Skywalker, become real as
he finds his destiny among the stars. Although you'd wonder how some
backwater boy in the galactic suburbs manages to get as far as he does.
He hooks up with
a Princess, a space smuggler, a wise Jedi Knight from the past who wields
amazing mind powers, a giant furry Wookie (Chewbacca) and a couple of
bumbling droids. Once he gets noticed by the evil Empire, he begins
a dizzying trip to the big leagues. He sees little of his future's path
at first - in which lies his new weapon (his dead father's lightsabre),
his joining the Rebel Alliance, the destruction of the Death Star (a
moon-sized killing machine) and a meeting with the Dark Lord of the
Sith - Darth Vader. With all the powers arrayed against him, our young
hero ends up searching the Death Star even as far as the garbage disposal
and finds the Princess-in-distress.
How does a young
nobody from the boonies manage to be so powerful in the Force (the mystical
power that is everywhere - and no, not the Backstreet Boys)? We'll
find out more about this in the future of course, and most of us already
know why...
